High Front Rounded Vowel

Who says [y] wasn't retained in AV? It was! Nitsy 00:21, 1 July 2013 (CDT)

Now that you mention it, I can't find such a reference in official sources (despite my claim in my very first post that DJP said so in TZUZ). However, I do not hear [y] in the AV dialog. You're saying you do? I guess we're going to have to look into this. --Iustinus 01:47, 1 July 2013 (CDT)
The only person I've ever heard say [y] on GoT was Melisandre, and even she did it only occasionally. She even mixed [y] and [i] in the same word! I highly doubt [y] appears in AV; it seems to be extraordinarily unpopular even among HV speakers (including David!). Zhalio 13:01, 1 July 2013 (CDT)
You're talking about two different things: How it's pronounced, and how it's supposed to be pronounced. Every instance of "y" in both High and Low Valyrian should be [y], and every instance of "ȳ" in High Valyrian should be [yː]. I feel like the wiki should reflect that. Nitsy 18:46, 3 July 2013 (CDT)
OK, I stand down. But why do you mention HV ȳ? I described that one correctly. Since you drew my attention to it, I did fix any that were omitted on the vocabulary list. --Iustinus 21:30, 3 July 2013 (CDT)
The table still recommends pronouncing it like "beet", though. Zhalio 03:41, 8 July 2013 (CDT)
Took care of that (well, removed the example... as in other cases I'm not going to try to give a simple explanation for linguistically naïve English speakers) and other references to ‹y› merging with ‹i›. Hopefully DJP will be satisfied with the current incarnation. --Iustinus 13:35, 8 July 2013 (CDT)
